What is Yoga?

Yoga is a multi-faceted practice that has been part of Indian culture for thousands of years. While many people today associate it primarily with physical postures it actually is a way of living.

The term “yoga” comes from the Sanskrit root “yuj,” meaning “to yoke” or “to unite,” reflecting the aim of the practice to harmonize the body, mind, and spirit. Through the practice of Yoga we can realize the interconnectedness of everything in this universe, resulting in us living a life that aligns with our true purpose and guiding us to make conscious choices that positively impact others and the health of planet earth.

Yoga’s origins trace back to ancient India, with references found in the oldest scriptures, the Vedas. Over time, various schools of thought developed, and yoga evolved into a comprehensive system with different branches and practices, including the practice of postures (asana), breathing practices (pranayama), concentration (dharana) and meditation (dhyana) as well as different cleansing techniques (shatkarma). Yoga can also include the practice of devotion (Bhakti Yoga), the focus on the study of scriptures (Jnana Yoga) and selfless services (Karma Yoga).
